Suited for use with highly familiar pathogens that rarely cause diseases in adults, posing minimal potential risk to laboratory personnel and the environment. There is no need to separate the laboratory from general traffic within the building, and operations are typically conducted on open laboratory benches following standard biosafety practices. Neither special containment equipment nor facilities (such as biological safety cabinets) are required or used.
