Variable frequency generators are commonly categorized into three methods:

1. Classified by the method of converted electrical energy

1.1 Electric generators can be divided into two main categories based on the method of electrical energy conversion: AC generators and DC generators.

1.2 The alternator is further divided into two types: synchronous and asynchronous generators. Synchronous generators are commonly used in modern power stations, while asynchronous generators are rarely used.

The alternator generators can be further divided into single-phase and three-phase models. The three-phase generator outputs a voltage of 380V, while the single-phase generator outputs a voltage of 220V.

1.3 The synchronous generators are further divided into two types: the hidden pole synchronous generator and the salient pole synchronous generator.

2. Categorized by excitation method

The excitation methods can be categorized into brush-type excitation generators and brushless excitation generators.

Brushed excitation generators use external excitation, while brushless excitation generators use self-excitation. The rectifying unit of the external excitation generator is on the stator of the generator, whereas the rectifying unit of the self-excitation generator is on the rotor of the generator set.

3. By type of driving power

There are various forms of power for generators, common power units include:

(1) Wind Turbine Generator

Wind turbines generate electricity by harnessing wind to turn the generator, producing current; these generators require no additional energy source and are pollution-free.

(2) Hydroelectric Generator

Hydroelectric generators utilize the potential energy of flowing water to generate power, driving the generator to produce electricity. They are also known as turbine generators, being devices that harness green natural resources for power generation.
